What is Sound Healing?
Sound healing is not just another fad that some people may consider to be “quackery”. The truth is, the power of vibrations is real. Even Einstein himself quoted that “everything is a vibration”. From the soothing sounds of your favourite tunes to the deep, resonating notes of a Tibetan singing bowl, we are exposed to the healing properties of sound in many different ways. But what exactly is it, and does it really work?
The science behind it all starts with the concept of resonance. This is essentially the frequency that everything vibrates at naturally, including your own body and organs. Each individual has their own resonant frequency. For example, when you tap a wineglass it will emit a tone depending on the size, shape and thickness of the glass. These resonant frequencies are what we call “prime resonance”, and they can be used to bring your body back into a balanced state of harmony and health.
It is believed that the vibrations created by tuning forks, crystal bowls and other sound healing instruments interact with the cells in your body to elicit a healing response. For example, one theory is that the sounds stimulate your cellular ion channels to open up. These channels are what allow your cells to communicate with each other and receive nourishment. When your ion channels are closed, your cells literally shut down, causing them to be dysfunctional and out of sync. When your ion channels are opened up again, it is thought that your cells can once again receive the vital nutrients they need to function properly, which will support and promote healing.
Other research shows that music and certain sounds increase your dopamine levels, the feel good neurotransmitter. It is believed that this is because they affect the ion channels in your brain. This is why listening to your favorite song can make you happy or lift your mood, while the droning noise of a construction site can leave you irritated and on edge.
During a sound therapy session, your practitioner will use a variety of instruments to create a custom sound bath that is tailored to your symptomatic state and intention for the session. For example, if you’re looking to reduce stress and improve sleep quality, the session will be different than if you’re experiencing chronic pain or anxiety.
The sound healing process allows you to tune into higher vibratory frequencies, helping you become a powerful manifestor. When you are in a vibrational state of harmony, it becomes easier to tune into the subtle signals from your intuition and the Universe, which can help you to make better decisions that support your health and wellbeing. While there is still more research to be done, most practitioners would agree that there’s no harm in trying sound healing – and most certainly no downside. Just be sure to talk to your doctor if you have any pre-existing conditions, especially those related to mental health, and don’t place sound instruments directly on or near metal implants (like a heart pacemaker). Also avoid this treatment during pregnancy as it can induce seizures in some people. What is sound healing
