Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is the enlargement of the breasts through the insertion of a saline or silicone implant, either in front of the chest tissue or underneath it (pectoral muscle). It’s an option for people who want larger breasts or to add symmetry to their body shape and proportions. It can also help to compensate for a loss of breast volume caused by pregnancy, weight changes or ageing.

During surgery, your surgeon will make one or more incisions in the breast crease. They will then make a pocket into which they insert the implant. They may use a tissue expander to prepare the site and enlarge the breast hemisphere before placing the implant. Some surgeons may choose to use a textured implant surface, which helps scar tissue to adhere to the implant. The implants can then be filled with saline or silicone gel, and the incisions closed with stitches or surgical glue.

After the procedure, you should expect soreness and bruising for a week or two. You can take over-the-counter pain relief if needed. It’s important to follow your surgeon’s instructions about returning to work and other activities. Contact the clinic where you had the operation if you experience pain, swelling, a lump or rash around your breasts or armpit.
